The Chartreuse is a massif of verticality, great limestone cliffs separating the high plateaux from the wooded valley bottoms. In the central valley, separated by the Col du Cucheron, are the villages of Saint-Pierre d'Entremont and Saint-Pierre de Chartreuse, peaceful, cut off from the hustle and bustle of the world. Here, the pace of life is set by the forests, the wildlife, the Grande Chartreuse monastery... and a host of mountain activities.
A limestone massif right next to Chambéry, the Chartreuse is the perfect place to discover summer mountaineering. There are mainly major climbing routes for all levels, as well as a few rocky ridges.
Grandes voies: limestone cliffs offering routes of several pitches, ideal for beginners to mountain climbing or for progressing to more challenging routes.
Rocky ridges: small, easy-to-access traverses, perfect for a relaxing first alpine race.
More demanding routes: for experienced climbers, some of the major routes offer steep, technical rock.
When the conditions are right, the Chartreuse offers a number of possibilities:
Small gullies and mixed couloirs: short but interesting lines, ideal for an introduction to winter mountaineering.
Ephemeral icefalls: sometimes found in cold winters.
The Chartreuse is just a stone's throw from Chambéry, Grenoble and Lyon. It's an ideal massif for all levels of climber, with small ridge routes and many long routes.
The easy rocky ridges and some well-equipped long routes offer a gentle introduction to mountaineering, while the high cliffs of the Pinet, Grand Manti and Dent de Crolles offer a wealth of less equipped or more difficult routes.
Yes, but conditions are rare. Some gullies and waterfalls appear in winter, giving you a taste of the Chartrousaine alpine atmosphere.
The Chartreuse is more accessible and ideal for first-time climbers. Belledonne is also more alpine and higher up, with longer, more challenging routes.
I'll lead your outings according to your wishes: initiation on a big route, an easy rocky ridge, or a more sustained route to progress.
