Aiguille de la Vanoise (2796m): the full traverse

The traverse of the Aiguille de la Vanoise is an emblematic ridge race in the heart of the Vanoise National Park, both accessible and spectacular. The atmosphere is resolutely aerial, especially when crossing the vertiginous north face: thrills guaranteed!

We start from the Fontanettes car park, near Pralognan-la-Vanoise. We climb gently through the forest, then the mountain pastures, to the Barmettes refuge. This is where we enter the heart of the park. The path, lined with pretty drystone walls, then leads us towards the Col de la Vanoise. On the way, we ford the famous Lac des Vaches, facing the impressive silhouette of the Aiguille. We can already see the ridge we're about to climb!

At the foot of the East ridge, a short climb through scree takes us to the start of the route. The first few pitches are easy and fun, allowing you to get your bearings on the rock. After an initial antecima, the ridge becomes gentler and offers its first horizontal sections. Then it rises again to lead to the East summit, where a well-deserved picnic break awaits us, with a breathtaking panorama. For those who wish to stop there, there is an escape route.

The next part, which is more challenging, is a long traverse balancing on the edge of the ridge, often very close to the void. This is the most impressive part, with the famous passage in the saddle, astride a horse or standing up for the most experienced climbers!

Finally, from the west summit, an easy descent with a few abseils takes us gently back to the path and terra firma.

The difficulty remains moderate (III max), but the exposure is real. You need to be at ease with the void and be able to move with confidence roped up on an airy ridge.
