Situated in the heart of the Alps, Chambéry is an ideal starting point for discovering mountaineering and climbing. Three complementary mountain ranges are less than an hour away:
BelledonneThis high, untamed massif with few ski lifts offers a wealth of great summer and winter races.
La ChartreuseThe area's steep limestone cliffs and high plateaux are perfect for big-pitch climbing at all levels, vertiginous belaying, some rocky ridges and, of course, winter mountaineering.
Les BaugesThis pre-Alpine massif has a more bucolic atmosphere, with beautiful ridges and varied long routes. In winter, there are opportunities for winter mountaineering, goulotte climbing and ice climbing.
These mountains are within easy reach of Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains, Grenoble, Lyon and Annecy, making them perfect destinations for mountaineering or day climbing.
To find out more about the mountain ranges accessible from Chambéry :
Mountaineering in the Belledonne
An authentic alpine massif, the ideal playground for summer mountaineering (ridges, major routes, traverses) and winter mountaineering (gullies, icefalls, mixed ridges).
Mountaineering in the Chartreuse
Accessible limestone cliffs, long routes for all levels, small rocky ridges and, in winter, a few gullies and ephemeral waterfalls.
Mountaineering in the Bauges
Emblematic ridges such as the Arcalod and Roc des Bœufs, great long climbing routes and a few mixed routes or waterfalls in winter conditions.
Chambéry is located at the crossroads of the Alps. In less than an hour, you can access three varied mountain ranges: Belledonne, Chartreuse and Bauges. Ideal for day trips or short courses.
The three most accessible are: Belledonne (wild and crystalline), Chartreuse (limestone cliffs, high plateaux and rocky ridges), and Bauges (bucolic setting, aesthetic ridges and great routes).
The Chartreuse offers easy ridges and long routes for all levels. The Bauges offers the Roc des Bœufs and long, winding routes. And Belledonne is also full of first-timers, such as the Arêtes du Pin.
Yes, provided the conditions are right. Belledonne is the richest (goulottes, icefalls, mixed ridges). Chartreuse and Bauges also offer some winter itineraries, but these are more occasional and sensitive to winter warming.
The cliffs around Chambéry (Chartreuse, Bauges) allow you to climb one or more pitches, often equipped. Mountaineering adds the aspect of mountain running: progression on ridges, mixed or snow routes, greater commitment.
I supervise all these activities as a mountain guide. Depending on what you're looking for, we'll work together to choose the right route: an introduction to the Chartreuse, a long ridge in the Bauges or a winter gully in the Belledonne.
