Beginner touring skier

Ski touring allows you to leave the marked trails and discover the mountain in a different way. A climb with the strength of your legs, a summit or col as your goal, then a downhill run in a natural environment.

For a first experience, I prefer an itinerary that allows time to discover the basic equipment and techniques, without seeking to climb up the mountain for the sake of it. We learn to use skins, to perform conversions, to manage the equipment, and to progress on different types of snow.

For skiers already experienced, the day can take a different form. We can seek a summit, a beautiful descent, a wild route, or simply enjoy the current good conditions. The elevation gain and difficulty are adjusted to your experience and fitness level.

The choice of sector is an integral part of the departure. Depending on the season, the snow cover and the stability of the snowpack, we can travel in Lauzière, Beaufortain, Maurienne, Belledonne, Vanoise or Tarentaise.

The goal is therefore not to make you follow a predetermined route, but to build a good day of hiking and skiing in the current conditions.

The experience in detail

We define your expectations together before the departure: discovery, summit, elevation gain, ski quality, technical progression, or simply the desire to spend a day in the mountains.

The sector and route are then chosen based on your level, the weather, the snow conditions, and the snow conditions.

  • A first day of ski hiking

For an introduction, the day begins with the handling of the equipment: skis, skins, knives, DVA, shovel and probe.

We gradually cover the techniques necessary for climbing: moving with the skins, conversion, managing effort, and choosing the route.

The descent then allows the technical advice to be put into practice in different types of snow, with a route chosen to remain adapted to the level of the group.

  • For already experienced skiers

The race can be more ambitious and take the form of a real ski race. The elevation gain, the distance, the difficulty of the climb and the nature of the descent are defined according to the group.

The day can also be used to work on a specific point or to discover a new massif.

The guide's opinion

A day trip is often the best way to discover cross-country skiing. It allows you to choose a fairly simple route to learn, or, conversely, to take advantage of a good day of snow directly for experienced skiers. I prefer to maintain this flexibility rather than systematically offering the same itinerary. In winter, conditions change quickly and there are many possibilities between the Lauzière, the Beaufortain, the Maurienne, the Vanoise, the Tarentaise and Belledonne.

Frequently asked questions

You need to be comfortable enough to ski off-piste and be able to control your skis in uneven snow. Ski ability and elevation gain are taken into account when choosing the route.

There is no imposed elevation gain. For an introduction, we prioritize a day that allows time to learn. For an experienced group, the elevation gain can be increased based on fitness and the itinerary.

The possibilities are numerous depending on the conditions: Belledonne, Bauges, Lauzière, Maurienne, Beaufortain, Vanoise or Tarentaise allow you to find routes suitable for different situations.

Yes, if the conditions allow achieving the intended goal. I advise you to choose the sector and route based on your level, the weather, the snow conditions, and the avalanche risk.

Yes, provided that the ski level and fitness are compatible. For a heterogeneous group, the route is chosen based on the least experienced participant.

The program can be modified. In ski touring, the choice of massif and route depends directly on the snow conditions, the weather, and the snow conditions. Another outing can be offered in a more suitable area.
