Via ferrata of Roche Veyrand – Chartreuse

Itinerary

Meet at 8:30 am in Saint-Pierre-d’Entremont.

After welcoming the group and distributing the equipment, we reach the start of the via ferrata via a mountain path. The approach involves approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour of walking, with nearly 300 metres of positive elevation gain.

Dominating the village of Saint-Pierre-d’Entremont, the Roche Veyrand via ferrata offers a beautiful mountain setting in the heart of the Chartreuse massif. Its main route is accessible to motivated beginners and provides an excellent introduction to the activity. For those seeking more of a challenge, a second, more athletic section allows for an extended adventure.

Access, as well as return, is via sometimes steep mountain paths. Even by choosing only the first part, this outing constitutes a real vertical hike offering beautiful viewpoints over the Entremonts valley.

The guide's opinion

The via-ferrata at Roche Veyrand is just one of the many activities you can enjoy in the Chartreuse: in the peace and quiet of a massif untouched by the hustle and bustle of tourism. Ideally positioned in the sun, this route is perfect for the days between seasons. This via is in two sections of increasing difficulty, so you can test yourself before embarking on the second half. Definitely worth doing.

Frequently asked questions

No. The first part of Roche Veyrand is suitable for those with a sporting inclination who are capable of mountain walking to discover the activity. I will take the time to explain the use of equipment and progression techniques before we begin the via.

You must be able to walk for 45 minutes to 1 hour on a steep path and follow this with several hours of activity. Progressing on the rungs and cables requires sustained effort but remains accessible to most sporty individuals.

No. It is entirely possible to do only the first part. The second section is more aerial and more strenuous. We will decide together on the day if the conditions and your level permit us to continue.

What to bring :

Hiking boots or trainers with a good sole
Weather-appropriate clothing
A bottle of water
A snack for the mid-afternoon or a picnic for the whole day
A small windbreaker in the bag

Yes. I will provide the helmet, harness, and certified via ferrata lanyard. You just need to come with your personal hiking gear.

The first part may be suitable for sporty and motivated children. The minimum age primarily depends on their height, their ease of movement, and their ability to follow safety instructions. Contact me to check if this outing is suitable for your child.

Via ferrata is an exposed activity. In the event of a thunderstorm, heavy rain, or unfavourable conditions, I may alter the schedule, suggest an alternative activity, or postpone the outing.

On a via ferrata, progression is mainly made using rungs, bars, and cables installed in the rock face. The activity is more accessible than climbing and allows you to quickly experience a vertical environment while remaining permanently secured to a lifeline.
